Wizards study the weave and record magic in spellbooks—the broadest spell list in D&D 5e.
Wizards are supreme magic-users, defined and united as a class by the spells they cast. Drawing on the subtle weave of magic that permeates the cosmos, wizards cast spells of explosive fire, arcing lightning, subtle deception, brute-force mind control, and countless other magical effects.
As a student of arcane magic, you have a spellbook containing spells that show the first glimmerings of your true power. The Wizard table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your wizard spells of 1st level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher.
Unlike other spellcasters, wizards can learn new spells through research and by copying them from scrolls and other wizards' spellbooks. This gives them unparalleled versatility, limited only by the spells they can prepare each day.
At 3rd level, wizards choose a subclass, such as Abjurer, Diviner, Evoker, or Illusionist. Your choice grants you features at 3rd level and again at 6th, 10th, and 14th level.
Standouts on the wizard list include Magic Missile, Fireball, and Find Familiar.
Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for your wizard spells.
You can cast a wizard spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell in your spellbook.
Your spellbook holds the wizard spells you know; cantrips are fixed in your mind.
